Build Cost $2,800
Duration 14 days

You don't need $50K to start van life. Here's how to convert a Toyota Sienna into a comfortable camper for under $3,000.

Van Life on a Real Budget

Instagram van life showcases $80,000 Sprinter builds with teak floors and espresso machines. But you can start van life this weekend with a used minivan and a trip to Home Depot. Our Toyota Sienna build cost $2,800 total and took two weekends.

The Platform Bed ($400)

Remove the rear seats (4 bolts each). Build a simple plywood platform on 2x4 legs that folds flat for a full-size sleeping area or lifts to create a sitting/work area. Cut a 4" memory foam mattress to size from Amazon. Done — you have a comfortable bed.

Solar & Power ($600)

A single 100W portable solar panel, a small PWM charge controller, and a 100Ah portable power station (Jackery or similar). This charges phones, runs a fan, and powers LED lights. Mount the panel on the roof with VHB tape or keep it portable.

Storage ($300)

Collapsible storage bins that fit under the platform. A hanging organizer on the back of the front seats. A small shelf unit behind the driver's seat for cooking supplies. Bungee cords and cargo nets for keeping things in place while driving.

Kitchen ($500)

A single-burner butane stove ($25), a small cooler or 12V cooler ($200), a basic pot/pan/utensil set ($50), a collapsible water jug with a battery-powered pump ($40), and a fold-out table that hooks into the rear hatch ($80).

Comfort Items ($1,000)

Window covers made from Reflectix and fabric ($80), a small USB-powered fan ($30), LED light strips ($20), a portable toilet for emergencies ($80), window rain guards so you can crack windows while sleeping ($60), and all the little things: curtain rods, hooks, clips, first aid kit, headlamp, etc.

Why a Minivan?

Better gas mileage (25-30 mpg vs 15-20 in a full van), fits in any parking spot, doesn't scream "I'm sleeping in here," cheap to maintain, and reliable. The Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey are bulletproof. You can find good ones for $5,000-10,000.
